EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is making a two-day working trip to the state of Chihuahua beginning this Friday.

In her daily public broadcast, Sheinbaum said she would first stop in two mountain communities to right a centuries-old wrong against Indigenous communities.

She is set to hand out 3,600 acres of land back to the Tarahumara or Raramuri people in Guasachique, and another 1,700 acres of forested land in San Elias Repechique to the same tribe. Both communities are in the mountains of southern Chihuahua.

“There is a history of dispossession against Indigenous people, and for the first time, we are returning land to the Raramuris,” Sheinbaum said.

She added Mexico is planning to noor its Indigenous roots next year during the 700th anniversary of Tenochtitlan, the ancient Aztec capital located where Mexico City now stands.

On Saturday at 10 a.m., Sheinbaum is to be in Juarez to inaugurate a government hospital.

No other public events are planned in the city. She leaves for Sonora on Saturday afternoon.
